Replicating extinct and endangered flowers

Handmade flowers have a multitude of applications. Some of them are more obvious, others not as such with new ones being discovered all the time.

Recently I have had a very unusual request for an … extinct flower that is featured in one of the still life paintings by Jan Davidsz de Heem, a Dutch baroque artist. The flower is a type of anemone, but nothing like we see today. As the flower is rare and extinct I could not find a template anywhere, so had to use my imagination and judgment to develop my own that will be close to the actual thing.

Below you will see the photos of my finished extinct anemone in fabric as well as a cope of the original painting it appears.

What unusual applications for your handmade flowers you have discovered? Please share in the comments 🙂
