Butterfly decor

Hand painted pure silk butterflies

I know everybody’s thoughts are about spring and summer these days especially with wall-to-wall sunshine outside. But some of us do like to plan ahead. So instead of thinking about Easter preparations one of my customers is busy planning her next Christmas tree design! Surfing the Internet she came across a picture of a tree all covered with butterflies and got so inspired that wanted the same. Unusual as it is, I received this order for 10 different sample butterflies a couple of weeks ago. Here are the butterflies, which are going to decorate a fir tree next Christmas.

Designer butterflies

Outside Christmas celebrations these lovely creatures will be used as hair clips for my customer’s young daughter.

Velvet Butterflies

I personally see them as a sweet touch to a wedding theme. And how would you use such butterflies? Any fresh ideas?

lace butterfly headband

New tutorial out! Lace butterfly: a stunning accessory you can make yourself without special tools.

I think I have not met anyone who did not like butterflies. They are fascinating and delicate creatures full of beauty. No wonder we want to capture it and embody in our designs to enjoy their perfection and elegance as and when we want it.
I love creating butterflies made of delicate lace and pure silk. Such designs look appropriate in wedding themes, they are perfect for special occasions, as little girls’ hair accessories, etc. They make a nice gift too.
I have developed this tutorial in a way that you can make your own stunning lace butterfly accessory without having to use any specialised tools.
By varying the size of the butterfly and uBysing coloured laces you can create an accessory to match any outfit. This lace butterfly can be attached to a headband, a hair clip, a brooch base or just sewn onto a garment, such as a wedding dress.  It can be used in millinery too to decorate hats and fasciantors. The applications are endless. Once you have mastered the art of making lace butterflies you can easily create different accessories in sizes and colours that are required.
You will learn how to
  • make beautifully light feather antennae
  • create a stunning body of seed beads
  • wire the wings so they hold their shape
  • attach the butterfly to a headband / hair clip

Mint and turquoise butterfly headband

It is time to present one of my last creations here which I am rather proud about. First, I like the colours, very summery brights and at the same time cooling mint and turquoise shades. Second,  virtually nobody is indifferent to butterflies! And we have 3 mounted onto this headband, all of them in different colours, textures and shapes. I have used lace, 3 kinds of silk fabrics (satin, pongee, organza), seed beads in a lovely mix of colours and, of course, my paints for silk. What not to love about them? Me thinks it is an ideal hair accessory to wear with a dress in similar colours. It would look elegant at a wedding party, prom or in fact for any occasion when you want to add a splash of colour 🙂

The mint and turquoise butterfly headband is a unnique creation of myself.

LB Fascinator

Here is another headband, or rather a little fascinator to compliment an LBD, or in fact any cocktail dress. It might look gothic at first but beads and lace add a lot of femininity to it let alone fragile peacock feather antennae! ☺
